Machiya Wedding Basic

A uniquely Japanese guest-house wedding in a guesthouse with a century of venerated history

A machiya is a type of residence built with traditional Japanese construction techniques and aesthetics. For this plan, the particular machiya that hosts oue weddings boasts a hundred years off history since its original construction.
Machiya are constructed with a nakaniwa, or inner courtyard, to interrupt lines of sight from the exterior. This space is built with good light exposure and ventilation in mind. Airfare to Japan, and transport to the venue are not included in the plan, so please make arrangements on your own or with a travel service.
A meal is not included in this plan, but there are a variety of restaurants available within the ceremony hotel. Reservations can be made from the hotel web site.
Lodging is not included in the plan. If you wish to stay at the ceremony hotel, please make reservations directly. Please use the link we provide to access the hotel web site.
Although the ceremony is held at a sacred holy place, vows are conducted in a civil ceremony style and will not imply or conflict with any religious affiliation or creed. While listening to the serene tones of trickling water in the inner courtyard, visitors will feel calm and a sense of elegant purity.

Instead of interior walls and windows, machiya use shōji and fusuma (sliding screens and paper doors), moving partitions that can be left open to unify the space. Machiya also contain a raised alcove called the tokonoma, a sacred space that is never to be stepped into. Additionally, the word toko includes the sense of “eternity.”

In the Machiya Wedding plan, the couple is surrounded by the Japanese scenery of the nakaniwa and tokonoma during the ceremony. This wedding gathers together venerated ancient Japanese rites, such as the ritual of san-san-kudo, or three-by-three exchange, in which the couple drink sake together, and the ritual of ippitsu, where each partner writes a single kanji character with a calligraphy brush to express their feelings for one another.
